Um Qais

(GADARA -Greek for a Place Surrounded), Arabic for Mother of Qais, for unknown reasons. In Greco-Roman times it was one of the original cities of the Decapolis and boasted a famous university. At the time of the New Testament it was the capital city of the istrict of the demonic man (Mark. 5:l); (Luke 8:26-27); (Matt. 8:28).
