(HESHBON -means: Industry), was in Biblical times the Capital of king Sihon of the Amorites. There are many references to this important city: (Numbers 21 :25-34, 32:3-37); (Joshua 9:10, 12:2-5, 13:lO-27, 21 :39); (Judges 11 :19-26); (I Chronicles 6:8); (Nehemiah 9:22); (Song of Solomon 7:4); (Isaiah 15:4, 16:8-9); (Jeremiah 48:2-45, 49:3). Its Greco-Roman name was Esbous, and was one of the cities of the Provincia Arabia. During Byzantine times it contained a Bishop see. Sadly during Islamic times it dwindled into a small village, where it prevails today.
