The Ammonites were the descendants of Ben-Ammi the incestuous son of Lot (Gen.19:38). They took over from the original inhabitants, the Rephaims (Deut. 2:20). Their biblical boundaries were between the rivers Arnon and Jabbok containing twenty cities (Judge 11:33). Other references are (Numbers 21:24); (Deuteronomy 2:19-37, 3:11-16); (Joshua 12:2, 13:10-25); and (Judges 3:13).

The fire-god Molech was their chief deity (1 Kings 11:1-33; II Kings 23:13). The worshipers would offer their children to it, which were burned alive as human sacrifices. They were known as fierce, cruel, plundering, nomads (Judges 7:11-12); (I Samuel 11:2); (II Kings 24:2); (Neh. 2:10-19, 4:3-7. 13:1-23); (Jeremiah 9:26, 25:21, 27:3, 40:11-14, 41:7-15, 49); (Eekiel 21, 25); (Amos 1:13); (Zephania 2:8-9).
